Quarantine Journals - Valentine's Day & SNOW SNOW SNOW

February 14th, 2021

For weeks, they have been talking about this arctic front that would be accosting us this week, but I felt very "I'll believe it when I see it" about their snow predictions of 4" inches.  We spent the week making valentines day cards to fill the boxes we made at the beginning of February.  I made paint-your-own cookies to replace the allergen filled cookies that Penny's school sent home for her valentines day party.  Penny seemed to really enjoy it, but Oliver just wanted to eat them. Ha.

And then came the weather.

It got super cold, super fast, and then it started snowing late last night.  We woke up to about a quarter inch of snow covering everything and coming down still.  The snow was powdery and dry and blew everywhere.  We took the kids out when the wind settled down a little bit.  They had so much fun running and playing in real snow that wasn't half ice or a mushy mess.  They made snow angels and threw it up in the air yelling "I'm Elsa!"  Neither one of them wanted to come inside.  But we promised another trip out there and came in to do valentine's day boxes.  The cards Penny made were so sweet, and I loved them.  The kids liked their little treats and candies.  Richard made some delicious meals for us all today, including lobster for dinner. It was super yummy.  Before dinner, I gave the kids some little Valentine's Day gifts, a small mario lego outfit set and some colors of the world crayons.  Oliver was SCREAMING all day--about the snow, about the balloons, about the legos, and then, you know, about everything else because he didn't have a nap and was volatile.

We went back out into the snow before dinner and spent more time out there. There was at least twice as much snow at this point, maybe more, and it was still snowing.  We played with it, had snowball fights, and I tried to freeze some bubbles too.  It didn't really work, but I may try tomorrow.

I had frozen some balloons and baggies with food coloring and dinosaurs and beads in them, but they weren't quite frozen.. too close to the house, I think.  We walked up and down the alley and up and down the sidewalk. It was nice because no one was really out. More and more snow fell and now we are up to at least 4".

We watched a movie with dinner, kids choice, and then Richard and I got in a fight over a faucet that he said was covered but wasn't. The hose was frozen on there and I had to go out myself and try to get it loose so I could probably cover it because it was dropping down to 5 degrees tonight.  It turned out to be a giant mess that really kind of ruined the day.  Which makes me really sad.

But the kids had a nice day, and there are lots of treats still outside for us to play with and I collected snow for snow ice cream too.  I hope we will have a nice day, at least the three of us, playing in the snow and melting the ice balls I made.  Penny already had tomorrow off, so no worries about whether or not there will be school.  CISD sent out a thing on Friday saying that they would either cancel school if need be, or do virtual only learning, or delay starts etc, so who knows what the week will hold.  It is not suppose to get above freezing until FRIDAY and we have another batch of snow supposedly coming through on Wednesday. This weather is just BIZARRE and exciting. I just wish we were enjoying the break and change of scenery a little more than I am at this very moment.  A pandemic isn't exactly easy on relationships, marriages included.
