Quarantine Journals - Second Pandemic Easter

Today marks our second Easter spent in isolation during this pandemic. It was full of pictures from friends spending the holidays with their families. It was full of joy and it was also full of sadness.

Last night, I had a dream that the last near decade had been a mistake and my mom was alive. We held a giant Easter celebration at my dad's house, and most of the family was there. My mom was preparing the prizes and getting ready. I was helping her and wrangling the kids. I told her I had a surprise planned, and she told me she had one too. She had bought my brother a tuba. I cheered. I said, I'll yell 1... 2... and then you come out with the tuba playing a little tune. She loved the idea. We were on our way out when a bunch of bikers showed up. There were there to look at an art exhibit that my parents had in the garage for some reason. We waited for them to leave, but then a landscaping crew showed up. I asked my dad to call and tell them to leave. The eggs were already out everywhere, more eggs than you would ever believe. He was upset because he wanted the yard mowed. I said, "dad, all the kids are waiting to go do their hunt! Tell them to wait an hour." He agreed. Then my phone rang and woke me up.

I got up early and snuck out the back door to hide the eggs. A little old lady walked by and caught me in the act. She chuckled. I snuck back in and got in bed. A few minutes later the kids came screaming into my bedroom that it was Easter and there were eggs. I heard Penny tell Richard that she's starting to think that we are the Easter bunny. I think I should probably be the one covering for him to go do the eggs.

We took the kids out and let them find the eggs. Oliver was really super duper excited; so was Penny.

They ran inside and started going through the eggs. They got some stretchy worm things and hexbugs and all sorts of candy. We built a race track for the hexbugs and raced them. Then we turned it into a maze too. The kids didn't really like the candy, but seemed to really enjoy the pop rocks.

A little later, we called my dad on FaceTime and he talked to the kids. He told them he had gifts for them, and that they needed to reach through the screen. I snuck into the yellow room and brought baskets around from behind the screen. He had called me last night to tell me that he was sorry he hadn't thought of sending them something sooner. I told him it was fine, I bought extra stuff. Oliver started SCREAMING about his plush Luigi. Apparently he had woke up the morning saying he hoped he got a stuffed animal Luigi and a waluigi, so I nailed that one. They got lego sets and chocolate bunnies too.

They built legos with Richard and then we did another Easter egg hunt outside. They got Mario hot wheels and more candy. I got Richard and I some York peppermint patties and then realized they had egg in them before Oliver had a chance to try them. I had to throw them all away, and then I had to check everything else again. And I ended up throwing a lot of that stuff away too because of cross contamination. I felt really, really stupid. Like I failed my kid. I traded them the York for a package of peeps and then snuck away to cry.

We played Mario kart as a family and while the kids kept playing, I put out one last set of baskets from us. They had a Mario figure, which resulted in Oliver SCREAMING AND JUMPING UP AND DOWN. They also had Mario pajamas and books, along with some rings and fidget toys.

They spent the evening playing with these, but Oliver was a hot mess from no nap and full, pure exhaustion. It was a tough evening. So we decided to watch a movie and then shuffled them off to bed.

I'm exhausted and I'm sad. Penny is off tomorrow but, of course, Richard is going into work.

I hope it can be a nice day.

Oh and yesterday I asked Penny what kind of treat I could make to make Easter special and she said cupcakes with an egg decoration. And she wanted to help, so we made them together.
